Sorry for the late reply ..... after I forced the "upgrade" of
kde-config-kdm ( I already had it installed, but the dependencies
seemed to be wrong ) by using "apt-get install kde-config-kdm",  kde
screensaver  was working again.

IIRC, it also forced the install of kdebase-kdm, which matches what
Rex is saying above.
