Unckeck "use anti-aliasing for fonts", check "use anti-aliasing for 
fonts, click Apply. Restart KDE.

Close.  Uncheck, Apply, Check, Apply should do the trick (only newly started
apps will see the benefit).

I think I've found a patch for kdebase to alleviate the need for these extra
steps to make things "just work".
