Actually "preferred form" is kind of up in the air. I have used
http://www.nongnu.org/buildpkg/ before. You can make rpms with just a
standard install script. It is very useful for packages that had no .spec
file and I just wanted a quick binary .rpm to distribute in house.

You can "easily" roll rpms without a spec file. I've used several commercial
apps that seem to do it the buildpkg way rather than using a proper .spec
file.

A followup question to you and Jose. I don't know if you have the answers, but
here goes. By introducing this testing kernel, have I in any way jeopardized
my normal update process? Will yum upgrades continue to work? Will that
kernel which is a test-kernel change before final release?

My other question has to do with the ATI drivers - besides solving the
blackout problem, do these drivers supposedly solve 3D performance?

On the BIOS question, neither of my machines are laptops and I currently have
BIOS level power management disabled on both.

*shrug* Is #1 working in binary rpm form; but, because of #2 Rex can't
get it installed? If the spec did some tweak to fix #1 and Rex would
like to rebuild against a newer libstdc++.so, it doesn't feel like a
"free" setup to work with. Who knows, Rex could have pinpointed the
issue by now with the spec released in the open instead of waving back
and forth about the issue on the mailing lists.

The GPL exists for this reason.

In this case, I'm 99% certain they created the rpm the "usual" way. (-:

Claude,

Yes, the ATI drivers should fix 3D performance on most ATI cards. Some of the
latest cards do not work with the driver yet. (ie x800's)

The ATI drivers may stop suspend from working, but they are working on that.

Now for the upgrade question. Since the ATI (fglrx) drivers are tied to the
kernel. You will not be able to upgrade your kernel until the kernel modules
for the fglrx driver are available for the new kernel. Usually the livna team
is pretty good about getting the drivers out in a couple of days..

Yum should hold back the new kernel until the modules are present.

Isn't there an X11 compat libary/RPM you can install? I thought I had one to
do just that.

Can you rpm2cpio and see if the spec file is in the rpm?

I think the shared lib I would need is/would-be from redhat 6.2, which I

Rex,

Have you looked at any of the compat-gcc or compat-libstdc++ rpm's?

Ok this is weird. I use kmenuedit to create a look that a want. It writes
applications-kmenuedit.menu in ~/.config/menus. Everything works fine. I
like this change so I copy the .config directory to a new computer and run
kbuildsycoca to force the new settings. New menus are there.

BUT, now when I configure the desktop I have no screensavers listed?! Dump
the .config back to what it was before ... run kbuildsyscoca ... screensavers
are back.

Doing this with a blank new user causes the same problem. How in the world
would a menus file make "kcmshell screensaver" list nothing? This is
happening on kde-redhat 3.4 ( CentOS 4 ) and the core 4 test3 kde 3.4.

Any ideas?

You know this is totally not kde-redhat related, right?
I have no idea if in FC3 it's the same, but probably /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers
