a nice re-work .. :)
braindump cometh:
* the fourth reason isn't a reason, it's the acknowledgement of commonalities
between the reader and KDE.
* instead of "four reasons to join us", perhaps re-use the tag line: "three
reasons to join the game"
* instead of "the desktop" in the image slideshow ("the desktop", "the
people", "join the game") i'd put "the software"
* i wonder if it would be possible to add a fourth image in that progression:
"the freedom". that would tie in with "be free" and give a possitive message
that ties in with the three reasons you are already kde even before you knew
it by joining :)
* the images are very eye catching (good thing) but it's really the Join now!
button we want people to hit. is there a way to visually bring the images and
the Join now! button together better? e.g. instead of a border around the
images that set them appart completely from everything else, have the image
frame joined with the grey bar that houses the Join now! button?
* the people in the middle area seems too visually repetative to me? it's
already in the header, it's already the "punch line" on the last image and it
gets in the feng shui of the black->blue gradient ... without actually adding
any meaning of their own. less is more here, perhaps.
it's similar with the word "join" which appears six times on that page,
scattered here and there. esp the 'join the game' tag in the grey bar which is
also in the header and so just fights with the "Join now!" button.
now that i look at it, i think it might be the header itself that's the
problem space. "radical" idea: could the header be removed? would it be better
to have people focus right on the content directly in this case? it's not a
content heavy site, after all.
e.g., why a List of Members? Login could be a button (different color?) next
to "Join now!" so that it's evident that after you join there's something
ongoing. the "Join" link is redundant. that just leaves "Home", and maybe we
can get away without that ...
i just blocked out the header on my screen here and it looks a -lot- better
without it imho :) a lot better visual flow, much less redundancy and i'm
visually taken straight to the "meat and potatoes" of "cool stuff, i want to
join now!"
switching gears, the text on left side says: "Become an official member of KDE
e.V.
For €25 a quarter you can ensure the international community of KDE continues
to grow making world class Free Software. "
the sell point isn't really "become an official member", right? that's the
how, but is it motivational? perhaps it could be incorporated into the join
the game picture or even just left out of the landing pitch page altogether?
also, i'd suggest putting the reason and the person first and the money last:
"You can help ensure that the international KDE community continues to grow
and make world-class Free Software for just €8.33 a month!" (ok, or €25 a
quarter; i just find that such an awkward way of wording it :)
i'm also left wondering "what the hell does that money do, exactly?" if the
wording was tightened down (e.g. by removing the "become an official member"
line?) then there would be room for a "Learn more ..." type link that shows
the benefits clearly.
when hitting "Join now!" there is no sign of progress, just "enter your
email". the # of steps and which step you are on should be there. often this
is done with a strip showing the heading of each step and the current one
activiated. also the word "submit" on the button (besides the negative psych
connotations, esp after all that talk of participatory joining :) is html
jargon; perhaps a more human friendly "next"?
