This is how linkedin works, and also a definition of network of proffesionals.
Simple, linkedin could be not the best tool for such "KDE User" group.
Linkeding could and already is pretty much used as a network for people 
somewhat interested in the KDE _project_. This makes the invitation idea good 
exactly because of existence of the 5sec+ contributors mentioned by Eva. I 
canot see a problem here - they can start contributing without accessing any 
profiles of older group members.

For users, there are thoushands of places in every country, eg. forums and 
vortals. The "KDE User" group would be another (of course invitation-based as 
linkedin requires), basically another "tag" for a number of linkedin users.

So do dot.kde.org comments, which is even better because not controlled by 
3rd-parties ;)
