because it often isn't zero cost nor is that something we can successfully
guarantee will continue to be a differentiatior or one that even matters to
people today (it doesn't to many, windows/mac comes with their hardware,
etc).
so the no-cost argument is often a bit deceitful (there are costs associated),
it can have the unintended side effect of making the software sound "cheap"
(== low or no value) and can be defeated by Microsoft dropping their prices
(c.f. their recent $3 offer to developing markets)
