let's turn this situation around a bit ... imagine that KDE had a large
installation that went in and as soon as GNOME PR people heard about it they
went and started "educating" the deploying organization about GNOME. what
would your reaction be?

note that certain people in the GNOME camp used to do this, but that these
days that's frowned upon. it's a low class maneuver, and here's why:

the various open source desktops combined currently have somewhere under 5% of
the market. there is 95% of the market to expand into. if we simply struggle
each other for the <5% we already have we won't get anywhere.

moreover, it says to the outside world that we (the "linux desktop" or the
"open source desktop", depending on who you are talking to) are not
coordinated and can't get along, that's it a bunch of chaos. this chases all
sorts of people away, from ISVs to possible deployments.

finally, it tends to piss off the people you go and talk to. not always, but
often enough. here they are just underway and BAM some other open source
project is after them to change. at some point they consider that it would've
been easier to stick with Microsoft because at least then they wouldn't get
harrassed.

and consider that a win for open source is also a win for KDE. and while a 5k
deployment is good, just keep in mind that there have been a few deployments
this year of >10k KDE desktops ... the whole pie is growing and we need to
keep focussed on that total growth.
