A long but interesting read here. You've put in an impressive amount of 
work. I'll just comment briefly on one section.

I think this may be getting things backwards for a relatively large 
group of high-potential target users, namely the users considering 
switching to Linux, but don't yet know what they are going to use on 
the desktop.

I believe that the structure of KDE's interface and its customisability 
make it the best desktop available for migrating users. "Power users" 
can even keep using their old keyboard shortcuts.

KDE is often criticised for being cluttered with too many options, and 
that may sometimes be a valid criticism. But making KDE look and feel 
like one's old desktop system (whether it's an integrated part of some 
operating system or not) is a matter of making a simple selection the 
first time you start it.

Perhaps I'm biased because these reasons played a big role for me 
personally when I chose KDE, and I realise that I'm not the average 
user. Still I believe that this is an attribute worth highlighting.
