Was this xpdf 3.x or 2.x?

Please note that all PDFs made with Scribus using advanced features
like color management and similar are *not* easy to handle with
legacy gv, xpdf or kghostview.

Scribus produces perfect and standard-compliant PDFs (even PDF/X3
for Prepress environments), but these old tools are not up to the
task. 

Also, for printing (or viewing) you may need Ghostscript 8.x, but
most distributions dont ship it yet.

Hopefully, a new initiative to bring Ghostscript up to date for
*all* distros will soon provide some results here.
