there are at least three groups working on making this easier.

morphix
metadistros (Spanish group)
sean finney and someone else I can't remember (kde person?)

the last effort is aimed at integrating the knoppix stuff more 
directly into debian.  morphix is for building custom cd's.  haven't 
looked into the metadistro effort, but i believe they are debian 
folks as well.
