My intuition tells me that this is a libstdc++ bug. I trapped the crash in
valgrind and it was doing a 4 byte write 0 bytes past an allocation of 0
bytes. The memory was allocated in the STL memory pools (looked like by a
map somewhere). So, I ran it again after setting the environment variable
GLIBCXX_FORCE_NEW=1 and I haven't yet been able to reproduce the crash.
Does this analysis sound reasonable?
