Interesting information, thanks David. I actually just committed some 
code for online IMAP filtering that gets mails in online IMAP folders 
without requiring the user to click on them. (Hopefully it works ok 
and no one gets hurt). Aaah now what's that nagging voice in the back 
of my head telling me I still owe you a commit to HEAD regarding 
compactable=false?

Please forgive my tardiness .. I haven't forgotten, I'm just 
distracted by the filter work I'm doing.
