After a little struggling, and some great help from David and Tobias, I
finally got pim compiled! Here's what I did.

I followed David's advice and removed all of the *.la files in kdepim. I then
symlinked the problematic la files to /opt/gnome/lib (I later found that I
had the same problem with libgthread and libglib). The annoying thing is that
those *.la files reference so files in /usr/lib and the actual *.so files
reside in /opt/gnome/lib for some reason. My system is apparently very
confused :)

I'm still curious to find out why configure was looking in /opt/gnome/lib in
the first place. If anyone can point me to some documentation or something
somewhere so I can find out how I can fix the *.la/*.so problem, I'd greatly
appreciate it.

Again thanks for all the help
