(1) autoconf is a steaming pile of fetid dingo's kidneys and 1.8.whatever
is incompatible with any and all older aclocal files you have installed.
Just like the last time autoconf was upgraded, and the time before that,
and ...

(2) the definitions are missing [] around the name being defined, like
this:

AC_DEFINE([AM_PATH_LIBGUPPI],...)
