I had the chance to test ical yesterday, and they do the coloring the
following way.
1) They have a fixed palette of colors (we could/should make it
configurable)

2) If the item is not selected, the whole item has a bright background
with dark fonts (the header text is ticketted by bold drawing)

3) If the item is selected, the header background is very dark and the
rest of the item a bit brightener and both fonts a white

If we use a fixed color palette, it should be trivial to implement,
otherwise we have to find a good algo for calculating the 3 color
schemes from a base color.
