Do non-anonymous logins work in 3.1.0?  3.1.2?

That is what I tried first, but I thought maybe it was the user name I 
entered.  Do you use a dn for the user name or a uid?  If uid, where 
does it know to look.  

Maybe this will go quicker if I just RTFS.  What file holds this 
logic?
