Jason Day now released a new official version of libmal:
http://jasonday.home.att.net/code/libmal/libmal.html

Of course, this makes my unofficial version deprecated, although it will still 
work. The library is still mpl (I guess, he didn't yet get any response from 
AvantGo's legal department about possible license changes), but this doesn't 
pose a problem any longer.
