But parsing only the first letter is certainly a bug.

Shouldn't it be possible to use the QComboBox::textChanged signal to 
find out, if the user changed the value by typing something?

I would prefer fixing it properly. It is possible to find out, if the 
user typed something or not, so we can use this information to trigger 
automatic update.
