I've just read everyone's responses (at least as far as 9ish this
morning; I'm subscribed to the digest version of the list because I read
it at work and my employer doesn't like me having too many distinct
non-work related e-mails, because they "get in the way" and "stop you
from being able to keep a clear inbox" and other notions like that) to
my previous e-mail. Thanks for the suggestions!
I've had a look at a few of the other applications people talked about,
and have downloaded a copy of KMyMoney2 and a few others I found on
apps.kde.com once I located the correct category! From what I see this
seems to be a field where a lot of people start working but don't get
around to finishing it, and there are a lot of (apparently) abandoned
KDE1 apps floating around. I now note that 'kash' is already in use
(seems to be another abandoned KDE1 app), so if I choose to go ahead
then I'll be looking for a name. While the 's/c/k/' idiom is
overworked, I feel it gives a sense of consistency to app naming, so I'd
like to use it if I can think of an alternative name.
I tried to follow up references to 'gnucash', but my searches all led to
'www.gnucash.org', for which the name servers appear to be down at the
moment. I found a sourceforge project page for the program, but it was
lacking on detail on what the program does. I believe it is more
complex than what I intended for my project initially, which is just a
very simple income/expenditure tracking application for personal
budgeting, kind of like the expenses tracking applications that are
featured on most PDAs, with maybe a few additional features aimed at
desktop users, but definitely the kind of application that has a small
window in the background, rather than the kind you'd run full-screen...
I find the small, single purpose application with simple interface
paradigm much better than the big-do-everything-clone-of-MS-app way that
a lot of stuff seems to be going at the moment (of course, integration
has its place too... integrating many small apps together into an easy
to use whole is a great way of extending the concept).
