You may need to set the permissions on the audio, mixer and dsp devices =
so all users can read and execute them.

I've installed Linux Slackware 8.0 and the kmix panel works fine
(showing all the controls, label, etc..) only for the root. For normal
users only an empty panel is shown - then I can't control the volume,
balance, anything. (The DSP is Sound Blaster 16 bits).
