A book for keeping financial records. I used to work in a bank; some of the
"books" were sets of card kept in a box for easy access; the cards were
inserted into a machine (loosely like a typewriter) to record on. Some
low-activity accounts, typically loan accounts, were actually bound books
(which you could take apart to add/remove pages) and were updated with pen and
ink.
Records of any kind of bank account; check, savings, loan were kept in a
ledger.
