The reason there is no universal answer is because this is handled in 
a variety of ways in different Distros.  SuSE's way generally works and 
has since 8.3.  However SuSE has changed the mechanism at least twice
since then, and in some cases you still have to manually hack /etc/fstab.

Other Distros's STILL don't work, even when KDE tries to make it work.

This is still in flux after all these years, There is no single standard.
