Not on RedHat/Fedora Core systems, which default to scalable fonts only. 
/etc/fonts/fonts.conf contains instead:
   <dir>/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1</dir>
   <dir>/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/OTF</dir>
