No, it is a valid .desktop file. The strange characters are the UTF-8 encoded 
translations for name and comments.

Number 4.
KDE prior to 3.2 created the menu from those files under KDEPREFIX/applnk, KDE 
from 3.2 on uses a locations shared with GNOME and other desktops, 
usually /usr/share/applications

Judging by its location (RecentDocuments) it seems related to the function 
which displays which file you have most recently used/viewed/edited.

No, desktop entry is the "header" for this kind of files, you'll find them in 
all four of them.

The same way: right click it to get the context menu, then choose menu entry 
properties.

However if your entry on the K menu works, just drag it to the desktop to 
create a new copy there.
