I have been using Konqueror for years and I'm afraid to say that I 
believe it is just an "impression" - I use many registration sites and 
notice no difference. I even tried the first of your examples.

A lot of these sites that require registrations, like on-line 
newspapers, have a complicated layout with many images and this may be 
the root of your experiences.

I tried the automatic login for washingtonpost.com. It appears that it 
does a check to ensure that cookies are enabled and this fails for 
Konqueror with cookies enabled. I tried to change the browser 
identification but this had no effect.

I don't know if this is a konqueror problem or a washingtonpost.com 
problem but if I were to guess I'd have to say washingtonpost.com. 
Maybe sending them an e-mail advising them that their cookie-enabled 
check is not compatible with all browsers might help.
