This is probably an example of the problem with distros.

They try to make things simple, but these things are not complicated to begin
with, and if the simplification doesn't work, your are out of luck.

Getting ALSA to work is a matter of having the correct stuff in your:
"/etc/modules.conf" file. This is simple to do, you just copy and paste from
the ALSA web site:

IIUC, this is what you need for your sound card:

http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/doc-php/template.php?company=Creative+Labs&card=Sound+Blaster+Audigy2+ZS+Value.&chip=emu10k2%2C+P17&module=emu10k1

         # ALSA portion
         alias char-major-116 snd
         alias snd-card-0 snd-emu10k1
         # module options should go here

         # OSS/Free portion
         alias char-major-14 soundcore
         alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0

         # card #1
         alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
         alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
         alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
         alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
         alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
