This kind of error is seen in several posts on both gentoo lists and forum.
Always at different times of a compile. Perhaps you best check them out
yourself. What I gathered from looking at them is:
In one case it helped to unmerge kde before emergeing the new version. (It
was discussed if AUTOCLEAN=yes would help or not)
Another case stated that doing an updatedb after the emerge sync should
help.

By the way. I let my box run the 3.1 installation (or rather upgrade from
rc6) tonight and it finished without an error. THough I have not run KDE
after that yet.
