The following is based on RH 6.2 & my site compiled KDEs.  I would 
expect RH 7.x to still use this basic format--what I have read leads 
me to believe this.

The main RH default desktop *dm is determined by the contents of 
/etc/sysconfig/desktop.  I have, of course, "KDE".  For Gnome I think 
that the file should contain simply "gnome".   For xdm, hmmm, I'd 
have to look at the prefdm script.  Your prefered dm read 
by /etc/X11/prefdm to fire up your login mgr.
