I was never able to avoid dependency hell using Ximian.

Ximian constantly  built in dependencies that their own installer could
not detect, they forced the installation of development packages
that I did not want, and the installer detected conflicts that were
in fact already resolved.  I spent hours chaseing dlls.  I quit.

In fact, I haven't chases a single missing package since opting out
of Ximian.  SuSE does it better.  RedHat does it better.  

Besides, with Ximian, I ended up with a lame gnome gui which
is light years behind KDE.
