I'm just starting to play with this for my wife's laptop and our primary 
desktop machine.

I've had success using NCFTP to manually (with the -R option) to put/get the 
/home/user/Desktop and /home/user/.kde directories from machine to machine.  
NCFTP offers ncftpput and ncftpget for inclusion in scripts. That will be 
next to set up a cron job for synchronizing the two boxes.
