hi Tom,
If your preference is GTK, I suggest you try those:
- xournal (http://xournal.sourceforge.net/) diary look and feel
- mypaint (http://mypaint.intilinux.com/) warning: self-promotion
- gogh (http://www.goghproject.com/) nice and simple, but not very active
Interesting programs from the non-gtk side:
- drawpile (http://drawpile.sourceforge.net/) using Qt4, focus on network
- flowpaint (http://www.flowpaint.org/) requires Java
- krita (http://www.koffice.org/krita/) see cited mail text below
