Creating a language doctype to highlight rexx source, I ommitted to code the DOCTYPE \
correctly, and ommitted the SYSTEM "language.dtd" from the <!DOCTYPE> spec.

The result was the editor highlighted the text in black, bold, italics. Very \
unhelpful when trying to debug this.

This could be solved by documenting this 'feature', or shovelling some sort of \
message out in the same way you could be when coming across badly formed documents \
(See bug 31826, Kate crashes on buggy syntax descriptions).
