Well.. just install recode... it can't be that hard? ;-) The desktop.po
file should be in UTF-8, not UTF-16. After installing recode you have to
do this to convert the file:
$ recode latin1..utf8 desktop.po
...and then change the charset line in the file from ISO 8859-1 to utf-8.

You should really try kbabel. It's really nice. If you really don't want
to use kbabel, you could write a script that converts the file just in
time.

Talking about kbabel... does anyone know why I cannot open PO files from
the catalog manager anymore?
