Oh, this is a nice proposal. I have started but I had very little time, so I
was thinking to do it little by little.

The problem is not only to modify images format. Here is the complete process :
-You will have to change the reference to those pictures in all SGML and NIF
files (usually index.sgml and index.nif)
- You will have to cenvert the pictuures themselves
- You will need to patch ksgml2html and SGML-tools, so that they use PNG
files instead of GIF ones. I can tell you which files to modify.
- After that, you will have to re-run ksgml2html to regenerate the HTML files
from the SGML and th NIF ones

Have you CVS access ? You will need it !!!

IMPORTANT : TO ALL TEAM LEADERS

Please update your ksgml2html and your SGML-tools so that they would now use
PNG images instead of GIF ones (especially LOGOTP3.PNG instead of LOGOTP3.GIF).
I will prepare a set of modifications for anyone requesting it.

Who is in charge of kdesdk tools ? I would like to update this package itself.

Methods submitted for converting from GIF to PNG so far :

"gif2png" from http://www.cdrom.com/pub/png/pngcode.html:
gif2png -dhri {} file.gif

convert from ImageMagick package
convert file.gif file.png

gimp (manual operation)

photoshop (manual operation)

To convert the reference to the picture file :

mv index.sgml index.old
sed '/<img src=".*\.gif">/s/\.gif">/.png">/g' index.old > index.sgml
rm index.sgml
----
