I hope you did not miss the typo applicaiton -> application.
Although I am not a native English speaker, i think it is "open a file in or 
with an external application, so on is not the right word here.

P.S. I tried a "reply all" in KMail 1.13.4 in KDE 4.4.4, but clicking Send put 
my system at 100% CPU-load, but the message was not send and I could only 
recover by clicking the Close button (the cross in the upper right corner) and 
waiting for the popup that the window did not respond. This bug is completely 
reproducable. So now I try a new message. BTW. "top i" only shows top as the 
active process and no other process although the CPU is at 98.x%us
