Depends on how you change tooltips and whatsthis'es: instead of right-clicking 
on the widget and select "change tooltip/whatsthis", directly edit both in 
the property editor.
Of course, that is doable if you don't need rich text or complex formatting; 
simple formatting like bold text can be done writing "<b>...</b>", etc.
Although, using the property editor can be result a bit uncomfortable, yes, 
especially for long texts or when adding \n.
