From my point of view it was OK. There were not that much string changes in 
the GUI, it was easy to handle them. So please reopen the branch again. 
And (if not already planned anyway) in addition I propose a documentation 
unfreeze as well, so that doc writers can update and fix docs for the branch 
again.
