I would like to start a technical discussion about the script msgsplit
(l10n/scripts/msgsplit)
It is used by Scripty to post-process all PO files (and some POT files) to
wrap them differently than the Gettext tools do it.
One the other side, nearly no team is using it.
The difference of both output formats (msgsplit on one side, Gettext or KBabel
on the other) make that difference are bigger than necessary and make it
difficult to find real differences between two revisions.
The easiest solution, at least for KDE4, would to drop msgsplit completely.
The main advantages are:
- same output format as Gettext tools (as the output will either be Gettext
tools themselves or KBabel could probably be fixed to output the same
format).
- faster Scripty run. (No need of post-processing.)
The main inconvenience:
- a small change in a msgstr could make a change of a few lines (but that is
less than artificial changes due to msgsplit).
Asumming that a complete drop of msgsplit is not wanted, then we have to talk
about each of its features and see which one are wanted (splitting at tags or
at certain (European) sentence separators) or which ones are not (wrap at 80
characters instead of 78).
Have a nice day!
