Hi,

I've got an idea for a new kde-project. I've discussed it with a few people
(Cornelius, Rinse, Bram) and since they react positive, I have made up this
overview so everyone can comment on the idea. What I really need is a
developer willing to write the code and maintaining that code in the future.

Heiko: maybe you are willing to do this, since you have done some work on
translation issues in the past.

I'm willing to maintain the project as a whole and write the documentation for
it.

Short summary:
The idea is to make it possible to update the translations between releases.

Longer summary:
I am thinking of a new application, something like a translation manager or
translation center. This controls all translations used within KDE. In this
application it is possible to select an application for which the translation
should be updated. Of course this should also work for a module or for all
installed applications.

Implementation:
There should be a stand alone application as described above, but there could
also be an option in every KDE application next to 'report bug' which is
called 'update translation'. This calls the main application with the
application, version and language as arguments.
When a user chooses to update a translation, the application could fetch the
newest translation from cvs, compile it and install it.
There could also be an automatic update feature. Which checks for updated
translations automatically once a week or so, since it is a seperate
application it is possible to use the systray and use the notifications.

Remarks:
One should fetch the translation from the right branch. This could be based on
the version of the application and some intelligence (think about extragear).
Maybe a mapping table is necessary for this. Maybe this is also necessary for
mapping of the applications to the modules.
We should keep it maintainable. So we should generate mappings from cvs, etc.
If setup as described it is not necessary that the translators change the way
they work right now.
It would be fast, when a bug gets reported about a translation it is possible
to update the translation and report to the user that they should choose:
help->update translation and the user can directly see that the bug is
resolved.

Well I can talk much more about this imho cool feature, but I want to keep it
short and simple for the moment. If you like the idea or have questions,
please let me know. If you want to program it, let me know as well. I think
it would be a valuable addition to KDE and it is not a dream, it is possible
with the way we all work right now.
