that this debate keeps popping up seems to indicate there is a real 
difference in both the meaning and the use of the words, not just 
old habits.

 From what I've heard, one of the original main ideas with *folders* 
was that it shouldn't matter what *directories* (or even what 
computers) the contents of the *folder* came from, so the 
(unknowing) user shouldn't have to bother in the GUI with the inner 
computer geographics, but rather organize stuff intuitively.

If that was indeed so, IMHO it's a pity the meaning drifted towards 
melting together.
