I am not sure about the current situation, since all this work on Alkimia
was done by rhabacker and he integrated it into 4.8.  I have no touched
4.x code in ages. So it could well be, that the implementation in 4.8 is
a good base, if not the best you can get atm.

I hope he will respond here too.
