Hmm, you _can_ use desktop files with plugins. No idea if you're supposed 
to do so, but we (actually our mapper developer) use it that way.
Plugin lookup is done with KTrader as we do with parts and the trader 
returns service offers which in turn point to KService instances.

Those can easily be queried for any property specified in the service's 
.desktop file.
