Hi Nick, 

This is a known bug that affects some fraction of Mandrake and Suse users.  
The solution is to upgrade to KStars 0.9, which you can find at 
http://edu.kde.org/kstars  

AFAIK, there are no RPMs available for this version, so you'll have to compile 
and install it yourself.  I can help you with that if you like.
