John, I advise you to take kdevelop and generate a mini-KDE application with 
an empty mainwindow. This one has the right automake/autoconf stuff you will 
need and the tutorial handbook covers how to follow the Qt tutorial within 
your online docs of Qt. Then you can also use this template to follow the 
code in the book as well.
