What is the right way to get a *.ui file to compile correctly?

The file in question is kdenonbeta/kml/elementDialog.ui and the problem I 
have is that no element.Dialog.moc.cpp is made unless I add extra make rules 
to Makefile.am.  I don't suppose this is right, so how should it work?
