Hmm, 

as far as I know, it works the same way as xdm does. I usually only update my 
/etc/X11/xdm/Xsession script. This script is executable and gets the desired 
environment as a parameter. If you like, I can send you my file. It's mainly 
RedHat 7.1 Standard but I added the stuff for KDE2 myself since I didn't 
install the binary packages. RedHat usually only calls other scripts from 
there. They have them in /usr/share/apps/switchdesk/Xclients.XXX where XXX is 
the ending for the environment. In those scripts everything you need to fire 
up the environment gets set/executed. 

The Xsession script also scans for .xsession in your homedirectory and falls 
back on this script if the environment you like isn't supported by the 
options within the file.
