I'd like to point out that I found debugging applets a bit tricky at first: 
you have to run the applet within appletproxy to get any backtraces from gdb, 
i.e. run 'gdb appletproxy' and then 'r 
$KDEDIR/share/apps/kicker/applets/myapplet.desktop'.
