It's not the same thing, I guess, but I'm using AltGr+;+e for é, that works fine
(even in kmail composer, as you can see).
AltGr generates a Mode_Switch here, according to xev.
Ah, and AltGr+; generates dead_acute, that's why.
And AltGr+'e' just gives 'e' in xev, not é.
Same in KWrite, BTW. I wonder why it works for you in kwrite :)
