There is only one reason I can imagine for this to happen: you probably have 
configured KMail to send to your ISP's SMTP server directly instead of you 
local MTA. You can configure every mail app to do so and every mail app will 
fail to send a message in that case because of the "wrong" sender address.
I've been using KMail for very long with sendmail and genericstable, no 
problems.
