In real life discussions the subject of a communication can be quite
obvious without using hard words;

imaging a person digging a hole, filling it up again and then finding out
that he has to put that cable in there. So he digs again.
In real life a simple 'outburst' with a smile will get that person to
see he made a mistake and fix it before to much damage has been done.

On the net you have to handle the thing a lot more political. For instance
you have the delay which email generates. Second the fact that you can not
use non-verbal expressions to make something clear. And last but not least
the fact that you have to express yourself very clearly because of cultural
and language barriers.

How would you tell the person making the above mistake? Most people choose
the political correct way of doing things, not because they think they will
otherwise be to personal or fear retribution. They are afraid to hurt ones
feelings.

Baciscally I think that you handle people on a mailing-list the same way
you talk to people you don't know. Simply because you don't knw them.
After reading some emails from a person you get to know him a bit better and
know what you can say.

There is no anology to the web, and no previous experience, everyone needs
time to find his/her place..

The only thing worse than failure is the fear of trying something new
